Microsoft has filed a patent for a contextual advertising system designed for PC and console gaming. The technology aims to display ads during natural breaks in gameplay, such as loading screens, save points, or the conclusion of a turn, rather than interrupting the active gaming experience.
The system identifies optimal moments for ad delivery by monitoring game state information, API signals, and event detection. Instead of fixed intervals, the software analyzes the environment to ensure ads appear only when they are least likely to disrupt the user's progress.
The patent also outlines a reward mechanism where players can earn ad-free gameplay time by watching promotional content. This approach mirrors the incentivized advertising models currently prevalent in mobile applications, allowing users to gain temporary immunity from interruptions.
The duration of the ad-free period could be set to a specific timeframe or linked to the completion of certain in-game milestones. Microsoft notes that this framework is not tied to any specific Xbox service or product, representing a broader exploration of ad-supported software models.
