Microsoft has initiated a major overhaul of the Windows 11 Photos app, introducing a redesigned interface, improved performance, and expanded AI capabilities. The update is currently available to Windows Insider testers, with a full release for all Windows 11 users scheduled for later this year.

The new gallery system consolidates local, OneDrive, and iCloud photos into a single interface. Users can now search for images using natural language queries, such as specific events or locations, and filter content by people. Additionally, the Moments feature for OneDrive users automatically organizes memories into collections, slideshows, or videos.

The photo editor has been rebuilt with a native architecture, resulting in a 25% faster startup time. It now supports HDR editing, as well as native handling of HEIC and WebP formats. New AI-driven tools allow for improved background object removal and the Relight feature for adjusting photo lighting.

The image viewer has also been redesigned for a cleaner look, with a 30% increase in average opening speed. It features enhanced HDR support and smoother navigation. Microsoft reports that overall application responsiveness has been optimized to reduce wait times across all core functions.
