Microsoft is developing a native Age API for Windows 11 to standardize age verification processes across the operating system. This system-level tool aims to replace fragmented methods like manual date-of-birth entry or third-party account linking, which are often inefficient and prone to privacy risks.

The API will function as a standardized query channel for applications, games, and browsers. By leveraging Microsoft Family Safety accounts, verified device profiles, and future trusted identity credentials, the system will provide developers with structured age-appropriate feedback without exposing sensitive personal data.

To protect user privacy, the API follows the principle of least privilege. It will only return boolean values or generalized age ranges, such as confirming if a user is over 13 or 18, rather than sharing full names or exact birth dates with third-party software.

This initiative responds to tightening global regulations, including the EU Digital Services Act and the UK Online Safety Act, which mandate strict age verification for digital content, advertising, and social features. The API is expected to be available for testing in upcoming Windows 11 preview builds.
