Microsoft has launched a public preview of Microsoft Defender for Linux desktop systems. This expansion brings enterprise-grade security tools previously reserved for Windows and Linux servers to developer workstations.
The desktop version includes core features such as antivirus protection, endpoint detection and response (EDR), threat analysis, and vulnerability management. It allows organizations to manage developer machines alongside cloud workloads and servers through a unified platform.
The software supports major Linux distributions, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, and SUSE Linux Enterprise. It is also compatible with common desktop environments like GNOME and KDE.
Deployment follows existing management workflows for Defender for Endpoint. The system automatically categorizes devices based on their environment, such as data centers or individual developer terminals, to assist with asset management.
Access to the service is restricted to enterprise users. It requires a Microsoft Defender for Endpoint Plan 2 license or inclusion in Microsoft 365 E5 and E7 enterprise subscription plans.
