Microsoft has introduced Copilot for Legal, a specialized AI tool designed for commercial clients. The platform integrates over 20 specific AI skills into the existing Copilot framework, tailored to assist legal professionals with tasks such as drafting contracts, reviewing agreements, and tracking obligations.

The tool operates within the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, primarily through the Word desktop application and the Cowork workspace. In Word, Copilot utilizes corporate playbooks to review contracts, identify critical clauses, and suggest revisions. It can also generate new drafts and legal memoranda by referencing historical documents stored in SharePoint.

The Cowork workspace manages complex workflows by extracting data from emails, meeting transcripts, and documents. It enables users to compare contract terms, establish case timelines, and compile meeting minutes. These features are designed to support multi-step legal processes across various applications.

Microsoft has partnered with several legal technology firms to provide additional plugins, including Bloomberg Law, Thomson Reuters HighQ, DocuSign, Harvey, Relativity, iManage, and NetDocuments. These integrations cover areas such as legal research, electronic signatures, and e-discovery.

The company emphasizes that Copilot for Legal serves as an assistant rather than a replacement for human judgment. All AI-generated content, including citations and revisions, requires manual verification. Access to the tool requires a Microsoft 365 Copilot commercial license and specific administrative configuration.
