Meta Platforms reports that political opposition in the United States has become a major obstacle for the development of new data centers following the recent midterm elections. The company is currently evaluating international locations for future expansion as a direct response to these domestic challenges.
Specific concerns focus on states like Louisiana and Texas, where local authorities may introduce stricter regulations or moratoriums on data center construction. These potential legislative or executive actions threaten to delay ongoing projects, including the Hyperion facility in Louisiana and a joint site with BlackRock in Texas.
The broader political climate is increasingly hostile toward such infrastructure, with voters recently approving 43 out of 44 measures aimed at restricting data center operations. Meta continues to monitor state-level policy shifts that could force the company to prioritize overseas sites over domestic investments.
