Meta is shifting its internal strategy by inviting some non-management employees within its Applied AI division to return to leadership roles. According to reports, this transition is voluntary for the affected staff members. The Applied AI department was established earlier this year and currently employs approximately 7,000 people, including those who previously held management positions before their transfer.

This move marks a change in direction for the company, which spent the past year focused on reducing middle management to improve operational efficiency. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has previously advocated for a leaner, startup-like organizational structure. Earlier this year, Meta cut its workforce by approximately 10 percent, with management roles being a primary target for these layoffs to offset significant AI investment costs.

Internal feedback indicates that some employees previously transferred to the Applied AI division were unhappy with the move, leading the company to allow them to leave the department. While Meta is now reconsidering its management structure, other tech companies continue to pursue aggressive downsizing. For instance, Uber recently announced plans to eliminate half of its micro-teams during its latest round of layoffs.
