Meta is developing a new model of smart glasses, internally known as Luna, which will feature no camera. The device is expected to launch as early as October, following a potential reveal at the company's Connect developer conference in Menlo Park on September 23 and 24.

The Luna glasses will replace the camera with six built-in microphones to facilitate interaction with Meta AI and the new Muse personal agent. The hardware will include a side button for AI activation and slimmer temples compared to existing models, while retaining speakers similar to the current Ray-Ban lineup.

The company plans to release the device in two distinct styles, currently code-named Clubmaster and Burbank. This shift comes after significant public and legal pressure regarding the privacy implications of the camera-equipped Ray-Ban smart glasses, which faced scrutiny from law enforcement and regulators.

The previous Ray-Ban Meta glasses were subject to multiple investigations, including reports of unauthorized filming and concerns from agencies like the NYPD and ICE. By removing the lens, the Luna model aims to eliminate the possibility of covert recording, though it will lack the point-of-view capture capabilities.
