Meta is developing new smart glasses under the codename Luna, which will feature no camera. The device is expected to include six microphones for voice interaction with the Meta AI and the Muse AI agent, alongside speakers similar to those in the Ray-Ban Meta line.
The company is currently working on two design variants, internally referred to as Clubmaster and Burbank. The new model will feature thinner temples and a dedicated button for activating the AI assistant. A potential unveiling is scheduled for the Meta Connect conference on September 23–24.
The decision to release a camera-less model follows public criticism and legal challenges regarding the privacy implications of the Ray-Ban Meta glasses. Reports indicated that users were secretly recording individuals, leading to investigations in Texas and Germany, as well as bans in various public institutions.
Meta has previously implemented software updates to disable the camera if the recording indicator is tampered with or blocked. Despite these measures, the company continues to face scrutiny over data collection practices and the potential for unauthorized recording of third parties.
