Meta has organized its AI development under the Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) unit, which was established in mid-2025 to centralize the company's artificial intelligence initiatives. The division is led by Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang and co-lead Nat Friedman.
The core research team responsible for building frontier AI models currently consists of approximately 100 people. This group has doubled in size from the initial 50 members. A dedicated infrastructure team of about 100 engineers supports these researchers by managing compute resources.
While the core research and infrastructure teams remain small, the broader MSL organization has expanded to include around 3,400 employees. These staff members focus on areas such as product integration, applied research, safety, and model deployment.
Meta has pursued an aggressive recruitment strategy, offering competitive compensation packages to attract top talent from other AI firms. The company has set a goal to hire an additional 50 to 100 elite researchers to further bolster its capabilities.
The company claims to have reached the AI frontier following the release of its Muse Wonder model. Meta plans to continue enhancing its compute infrastructure to remain competitive with other labs in the sector.
