Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius confirmed that the compact version of the G-Class will launch within the next 24 months. The company originally announced the project in 2023 and shared an official teaser in 2025. The vehicle is guaranteed to arrive before the end of 2028.
The new model will be part of the compact lineup, sharing a footprint with the GLA, GLB, and CLA. Unlike those models, it will feature a bespoke ladder-frame chassis designed for off-road performance. The design will retain the iconic boxy shape, flat surfaces, and round LED headlights of the original G-Class.
Mercedes-Benz has adjusted its powertrain strategy due to market conditions and dealer feedback. While the vehicle was initially planned as an electric-only model, the company will now offer a hybrid version. The electric variant is expected to feature a dual-motor AWD system and an 85 kWh NMC battery pack.
The hybrid version of the compact off-roader may utilize an electrified 1.5-liter engine, similar to the one found in the CLA. All versions of the vehicle will come standard with all-wheel drive. The primary competitor for this upcoming model is expected to be the smaller version of the Land Rover Defender.
