Mercedes-Benz conducted a unique crash test involving two moving vehicles to evaluate the safety of the new-generation CLA. The test featured a petrol-powered CLA Shooting Brake colliding with an all-electric CLA sedan in a T-bone configuration, simulating a typical intersection accident.
Both vehicles were traveling at 56 km/h during the impact. The test demonstrated the performance of crumple zones and airbag systems, including side and front deployments. In the electric model, the high-voltage battery system automatically disconnected from the drivetrain, while the fuel system in the petrol version shut down to prevent fire.
The test utilized eight crash-test dummies. According to Mercedes-Benz, all readings remained within safe biomechanical limits, indicating a low risk of life-threatening injuries. Additionally, the electric CLA's pop-out door handles deployed after the collision, and the side windows opened as part of the safety response.
