BMW is developing its first three-row electric SUV, the iX7, which was recently spotted during testing at the Nürburgring circuit in Germany. The vehicle follows the iX3 and iX5 in the company's lineup, incorporating elements of the Neue Klasse design and technology. Despite these updates, the model maintains a traditional aesthetic compared to other upcoming electric vehicles from the brand.
The prototype features a wide grille and split headlights, resembling the current X7 design rather than the styling seen on the iX3. The vehicle also utilizes pillar-mounted door handles instead of traditional pull-style ones. While official specifications are pending, the iX7 is expected to feature a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain, similar to the setup found in the iX5 60 xDrive.
The iX5 60 xDrive utilizes a 144 kWh battery and an 800V electrical system. During a recent demonstration in Southern California, the iX5 achieved a peak charging rate of 464 kW, allowing it to add 170 miles of range in 10 minutes. BMW plans to begin production of the iX7 at its Spartanburg facility in the United States in late 2027, with a full debut expected by mid-2027.
