Researchers at MEPhI have developed compact detectors designed to measure gamma radiation and charged particles. These devices are built for small satellites, specifically CubeSats, with dimensions not exceeding 1U, which is 10x10x10 cm. The detectors are intended for integration onto the exterior of 3U CubeSats manufactured by Sputnix and Geoscan.

The device utilizes a modified gamma spectrometer equipped with an anti-coincidence system. This system distinguishes between electromagnetic photons and charged particles by detecting signals triggered by the latter. While the new detectors operate in a lower energy range compared to large-scale instruments like the 470 kg PAMELA, they provide significant scientific utility for small-scale missions.

The project aims to miniaturize technology previously reserved for large observatories. These detectors can function independently or serve as part of broader astronomical networks, identifying regions of interest for larger telescopes. The launch of three NATALIYA units is scheduled for 2027.
