MegaFon has introduced a temporary feature called 5G Mode, which is available to all subscribers at no additional cost. Despite the name, the service operates within the existing LTE infrastructure rather than on 5G networks. The operator claims this enhancement can boost mobile internet speeds by up to 1.6 times compared to standard LTE connections.
The promotional period runs from September 15 to September 20. During these dates, users can manually enable the feature through their personal account. Once activated, the speed boost remains active for a duration of six hours. No changes to SIM cards or current service plans are required to access the service.
The operator notes that the feature is compatible with most modern smartphones, including devices from Samsung Galaxy and Apple. MegaFon suggests utilizing this mode for data-intensive tasks such as high-definition video streaming, online gaming, video calls, and large file downloads, particularly in crowded areas like airports or train stations.
It is important to note that 5G Mode is a commercial branding for an acceleration service rather than a transition to actual 5G technology. The actual performance improvements depend on various external factors, including current network congestion, local signal coverage, and the technical specifications of the user's mobile device.
