MegaFon has officially launched its 5G network across several Russian cities, including Nizhny Novgorod. The rollout is part of a broader strategy to deploy the next-generation standard in major metropolitan areas and industrial hubs throughout the country.
In Nizhny Novgorod, the network is active at Minin and Pozharsky Square, Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street near Dynamo Stadium, and along Varvarskaya Street. The company utilized its existing LTE infrastructure and technological neutrality to deploy 5G by upgrading current base stations.
The 5G service is now available in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Kazan, Krasnodar, Samara, Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Veliky Novgorod, and Tver. Access requires a 5G-compatible smartphone, though the operator offers a 5G mode setting to boost speeds on non-compatible devices.
MegaFon CEO Khachatur Pombukhchan stated that the network serves as a foundation for the digital transformation of local industries and social sectors. Regional authorities noted that the technology is expected to accelerate development in the local IT and industrial landscape.
