MegaFon has deployed a 5G network in Yekaterinburg using domestic infrastructure. The project is currently active at the Yekaterinburg Expo venue, which hosts the International Youth Festival 2026. The network utilizes base stations developed by Yadro, built on a 5G-Ready platform, and operates within the n79 frequency band.
The service is available to MegaFon subscribers with compatible smartphones. Devices connect to the 5G network automatically without the need for manual configuration or prior registration. According to the company, this deployment serves as a practical demonstration of the readiness of Russian technologies for fifth-generation network standards.
The industry continues to work on increasing the share of domestic components in telecommunications equipment. While the current share of Russian components in Irteya 5G base stations does not exceed 5 percent, plans are in place to increase this figure to 30 percent by 2028. As of September 11, all four major Russian operators have launched 5G networks in select cities.
