MegaFon has deployed 5G connectivity across three major railway hubs in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. The new network is now operational at the Kievsky and Leningradsky stations in Moscow, as well as the Moskovsky station in Saint Petersburg. Access is available to users with 5G-compatible smartphones.
The operator utilized existing LTE infrastructure to roll out the service. By leveraging technological neutrality, the company enabled 5G operation on frequencies already in use. These specific locations were selected due to high passenger density and consistent network traffic demands throughout the week.
Daily traffic at the Kievsky and Leningradsky terminals reaches hundreds of thousands of people. Peak data consumption occurs between 15:00 and 20:00, coinciding with the departure schedules of suburban and long-distance trains. The network is designed to handle high loads and reduce latency for multiple simultaneous connections.
For users with devices lacking native 5G support, the operator introduced a service called Mega5G. This option adjusts network settings to provide data speeds comparable to 5G performance on non-compatible hardware. Passengers can utilize the connection for video calls, streaming, and cloud-based tasks.
