McKinsey has introduced an AI-powered client simulation as part of its recruitment process for entry-level business analyst positions in North America. Candidates will engage in a 10-minute conversation with an AI avatar, which is designed to replicate approximately 80% of typical consultant-client interactions.

Despite the use of AI, the software does not evaluate candidates. Human assessors remain present to observe the performance and make all hiring decisions. The firm emphasizes that the simulation is not programmed to behave aggressively, ensuring a consistent experience for all applicants.

The pilot program currently involves hundreds of candidates in North America. This initiative complements existing hiring methods, such as the Solve assessment and personal experience interviews. Starting salaries for these analyst roles are set at $128,000.

This project follows previous AI integrations at the firm. In January 2026, McKinsey began using its generative AI tool, Lilli, in final-round interviews. Additionally, in April 2026, the company released a free AI tool to help applicants practice for the quantitative sections of case studies.
