Mastercard is expanding its presence in agentic commerce through new strategic partnerships with OpenAI and Tencent. CEO Michael Miebach confirmed that these collaborations focus on payment infrastructure, joint service growth, and AI transformation within the digital economy.

The company is promoting its Mastercard Agent Pay infrastructure, which utilizes tokenization to secure transactions made by AI shopping agents. This technology is already integrated into Shopify’s Shop Pay service and is a core component of the new agreement with OpenAI to enhance consumer trust in automated purchasing.

Additionally, Mastercard has signed a memorandum of understanding with Tencent’s TenPay Global. The partnership aims to improve cross-border payment interoperability and explore AI-enabled commerce solutions, including Mastercard Agent Connect and Virtual C-Suite tools.

The collaboration with TenPay Global also covers QR code acceptance for international visitors in mainland China and remittance services within the WeChat ecosystem. Mastercard emphasizes that building secure and reliable frameworks is essential for the future of AI-driven transactions.
