Mastercard has transitioned its Agent Pay for Machines system from a conceptual phase to a live demonstration. The platform enables autonomous AI agents to discover services, negotiate terms, and execute payments within pre-defined human-set spending limits.
The system utilizes the x402 open protocol to handle payment requests. When an agent encounters a service requiring payment, it generates a digitally signed voucher. This voucher serves as a secure promise to pay, which providers verify before delivering the service. Interactions occur off-chain at machine speed, allowing providers to batch vouchers for later redemption.
During a live demonstration at Cloudflare’s Connect conference, an AI agent for the agency Hype executed a marketing campaign. The agent completed nine payments to two independent merchants without requiring separate accounts or invoices. The process involved social media research and image generation via Cloudflare.
The technical infrastructure leverages several partners. Coinbase’s developer platform provided the wallet, while the Ethereum layer-2 network Base handled on-chain settlement. BVNK, a stablecoin firm acquired by Mastercard in August, managed payments and settlements in fiat or stablecoins through the Global Money Platform.
Mastercard is now providing developers with access to buyer- and seller-side APIs, a dedicated toolkit, and a sandbox environment. This launch follows pilot programs conducted with Cloudflare, Ant International, AWS, BVNK, and Coinbase.
