Mastercard has launched early developer access to its Agent Pay for Machines program, unveiled on October 20, 2026, at the Cloudflare Connect conference. The initiative allows AI agents to execute payments autonomously within pre-defined spending limits set by human users.
The program provides developers with a suite of APIs for buyers and sellers, a comprehensive toolkit, and a testing sandbox. Supported payment methods include traditional bank accounts, cards, and stablecoins, all featuring integrated spending controls.
During a demonstration, an AI agent managed an advertising campaign, performing nine payments to merchants AIsa and Cloudflare AI Gateway from a pre-approved budget. The system utilized the x402 protocol, an initiative by Coinbase designed to support both blockchain and traditional payment rails.
Mastercard has previously conducted pilot programs with partners including Coinbase, Base, Ant International, BVNK, AIsa, and Cloudflare. The project is currently in a pilot phase, with the company gathering developer feedback to refine the system before a broader commercial release.
