MacroCycle, a three-year-old startup based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has secured a deal with Meta to support the construction of its first commercial plastic recycling plant in the United States. Under the agreement, Meta will purchase environmental attribute credits from the startup, providing a revenue stream to fund the facility.
The startup utilizes a solvent-based process to dissolve and purify PET plastic waste, including textiles. This method reportedly generates 80% fewer carbon emissions compared to the production of virgin PET plastic. The company aims to produce recycled materials that are indistinguishable from new plastic at competitive prices.
The initial demonstration plant is designed to produce 5,000 metric tons of recycled plastic annually. MacroCycle plans to scale its operations significantly in the future, with subsequent facilities projected to have a production capacity of 50,000 metric tons per year.
For Meta, the partnership serves as a strategy to manage its growing carbon footprint associated with AI development. The company intends to foster a market for low-carbon materials, which it utilizes within its own supply chain for hardware and packaging.
