Li Auto plans to begin installing solid-state traction batteries in limited batches of its vehicles in 2027 and 2028. The company has been developing its own battery technology since 2020. While the automaker has utilized related production techniques in smart glasses since December 2025, scaling this for mass automotive production is expected to take five years.
Mass-market adoption of solid-state batteries in Li Auto vehicles is projected to occur after 2032. The company is working on the development of these batteries alongside industry leaders such as CATL, BYD, and CALB. Currently, Li Auto collaborates with Sunwoda through a joint venture established in autumn 2025 to produce current-generation batteries for its L6, L8, i8, and i9 models.
Several other Chinese manufacturers are also advancing their solid-state battery timelines. CATL and BYD plan to start small-batch production in 2027. FAW intends to sell mass-produced electric vehicles with these batteries starting next year. Chery is set to begin testing solid-state batteries in vehicles in 2027, while regulators have restricted the labeling of semi-solid batteries as solid-state.
