LGT Financial Services AG has launched a live pilot of its post-quantum migration strategy within its online banking system. The company began addressing quantum safety risks in 2022, establishing a dedicated competence center to coordinate security operations, infrastructure, and vendor management.
The bank adopts a phased approach, treating the transition as a series of migration waves rather than a single project. This strategy allows teams to manage cryptographic inventory and implementation tasks incrementally, avoiding the complexities of a total system overhaul.
LGT started engaging with suppliers in 2023 and 2024 to assess product roadmaps and algorithm compatibility. The technical implementation involves modernizing the Transport Layer Security baseline and utilizing hybrid key exchange, which pairs classical methods with NIST-standardized mechanisms.
Testing revealed interoperability challenges across the connection path, including issues with load balancers and content delivery networks. These findings highlighted the necessity of end-to-end testing to identify existing technical debt, such as legacy hardware and unsupported firmware.
