LG Electronics has unveiled a new oil-free centrifugal chiller designed specifically for AI data centers. The system utilizes proprietary oil-free magnetic bearing technology, which eliminates mechanical friction and removes the need for oil circulation pumps and associated piping. This design prevents efficiency losses caused by oil film buildup in heat exchangers.
The chiller incorporates a natural refrigerant pre-cooling system that allows for cooling without the compressor during winter months. By stopping the compressor, which typically accounts for over 80 percent of total energy consumption, the unit leverages low ambient temperatures to circulate refrigerant and dissipate heat. This approach reduces annual power consumption by 30 percent.
The device uses R-513A refrigerant, which offers a 50 percent improvement in global warming potential compared to R-134a. Additionally, the chiller features machine learning capabilities to detect anomalies and prevent unexpected downtime. In the event of a power outage, the system can restore 100 percent of its rated cooling capacity within 180 seconds.
