Kalshi Prime brokerage customers can now borrow dollars from affiliate Kalshi Katalyst using bitcoin, ether, or eligible stablecoins as collateral. These assets are held with BitGo Bank and Trust. Borrowed funds are intended for perpetual futures margin and other eligible margin products.
Borrowers retain ownership of their pledged cryptocurrency, though the lender maintains a security interest. The financing arrangement is specifically designed for futures trading rather than event-based wagers. Kalshi Prime operates as a CFTC-registered futures commission merchant, while the lending affiliate and its loans remain outside CFTC or National Futures Association regulation.
The arrangement introduces risks associated with market volatility. If the value of the pledged cryptocurrency declines, the collateral loses value while the dollar loan principal remains unchanged. Borrowers must manage these positions separately, as gains in a futures trade do not automatically offset losses in collateral value.
Institutional event trading also utilizes crypto collateral. A March offering from BitGo and Susquehanna Crypto allows the use of bitcoin, stablecoins, or dollars for event-linked derivatives, requiring a minimum trade size of $100,000. This trend reflects a broader shift toward using crypto holdings to access liquidity.
