JR East, the primary passenger railway operator in Japan, has introduced a specialized robot equipped with a chainsaw for infrastructure maintenance. The machine is mounted on a rail-based truck and is designed to assist with tasks such as clearing tree branches along railway lines.

The robotic system has been available to company engineers since March. JR East is deploying this technology to address ongoing labor shortages in the sector. Currently, the operation of the robot requires manual control, though the company is exploring future possibilities for autonomous functionality.

The development of this robot aligns with broader shifts in the company's maintenance strategy, which now includes more daytime work to improve worker safety. JR East is actively integrating various AI-driven tools, including drones for infrastructure inspection and disaster recovery programs.
