The American aerospace firm JetZero has secured $5.3 million in funding from the Federal Aviation Administration. The capital is earmarked for research on the Jet1 full-scale demonstrator, specifically focusing on airflow analysis around its engines.
The Jet1 prototype utilizes a Blended Wing Body design, where the engines are mounted above the fuselage. This configuration aims to reduce noise levels for areas surrounding airports. Engineers will measure airflow parameters during takeoff, climb, cruise, and ground operations.
JetZero is developing the Z4 passenger aircraft based on this concept, targeting a capacity of 250 passengers and a range of 9260 kilometers. The company estimates that the aerodynamic design will reduce fuel consumption by up to 50 percent compared to standard aircraft.
Construction of the Jet1 demonstrator is underway, with progress reaching 40 percent as of June. The company expects the prototype to conduct its maiden flight in the fourth quarter of 2027, while commercial operations for the Z4 are projected for the early 2030s.
