Intel confirmed its ongoing commitment to the Terafab project, a semiconductor venture established by SpaceX, Tesla, and xAI. The collaboration involves Terafab utilizing Intel's next-generation 14A fabrication process for chip production.
Elon Musk dismissed reports suggesting that his companies would invest in Terafab and subsequently partner with TSMC to operate the facility. Musk clarified that his companies intend to build and manage the fab independently.
Musk suggested that TSMC could potentially sublease a portion of the Terafab facility. However, industry analysts note that such an arrangement faces significant technical and contractual hurdles, including IP protection and operational liability.
The integration of different manufacturing processes within a single facility presents complex challenges. Converting space for TSMC's proprietary technology would require distinct equipment configurations, material flows, and contamination control protocols.
The potential for shared infrastructure, such as power and cooling systems, introduces risks regarding operational responsibility. Determining liability for production downtime in a multi-tenant environment remains a complex issue.
