Instagram has launched a desktop version of its Edits video-editing application for Mac users. This release aims to support complex projects by leveraging larger screens, mouse input, and keyboard controls. The platform now competes directly with the CapCut desktop application, which has been available for Windows and Mac since 2021.
The desktop software includes features such as licensed and royalty-free music, video and sound effects, and automatic multi-language captions. Users can sync saved audio and text styles from the mobile version, import custom fonts, and configure keyboard shortcuts. The interface provides a multi-track timeline, keyframe transitions, and audio waveforms.
Creators can publish content directly to Instagram from the desktop app, including native tagging and location features. The tool supports both horizontal and vertical video formats, allowing for watermark-free 4K exports. Instagram intends to release weekly updates and is developing a feature for seamless project editing across desktop and mobile devices.
The mobile version of Edits currently serves more than 50 million creators. The company plans to continue its development alongside the new desktop offering to accommodate larger editing projects that exceed the limitations of mobile interfaces.
