MTS representatives stated that the initial launch of 5G networks in Russia will not provide a significant increase in data transfer speeds for users. The technology is currently being deployed using existing LTE frequencies under the principle of technological neutrality, which results in a 5G icon appearing on devices without a substantial performance boost.
Starting in 2027, operators plan to deploy gigabit 5G networks using domestic equipment in the 4.9 GHz band. T2 noted that while they do not promise laboratory-level speeds, they consider a speed of 800 Mbps achievable, which is four to five times faster than current capabilities. MTS also maintains a gigabit 5G network in five cities with peak speeds of 1.5 Gbps.
On September 11, all four major Russian operators launched 5G networks in selected cities. The Ministry of Digital Development clarified that 5G access on iPhones depends on Apple's internal policies. Meanwhile, MegaFon continues to develop its infrastructure based on user demand, and Beeline has declined to provide official comments on the matter.
