The Battery Show North America 2026, held from October 12 to 15 in Detroit, highlighted a shift in industry focus from theoretical possibilities to proven deployments. Participants noted that manufacturers are increasingly prioritizing grid storage, defense, and industrial applications alongside passenger electric vehicles.
Automakers such as Ford, GM, and Volkswagen are repurposing existing battery manufacturing assets to meet the rising demand for grid storage. Research institutions are also expanding their capabilities, exemplified by the 93,000-square-foot Grid Storage Launchpad at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
Proterra announced plans to offer a U.S.-made cell option for its Onyx Battery Platform, with shipments scheduled to begin in 2027. The company expects this initiative to increase its American content by more than 600 percent, aiming to improve supply chain certainty for commercial vehicle manufacturers.
Industry leaders emphasized that future success depends on domestic supply chains and rigorous real-world validation. Technologies such as solid-state and sodium-ion batteries must now demonstrate performance through thousands of operating hours to meet the requirements of heavy-duty equipment.
