Industrial Next, a startup founded in 2021 by former Tesla employees Lukas Pankau and Allen Pan, is developing AI-powered robotic systems designed to adapt to new manufacturing tasks in minutes rather than weeks. The company aims to replace traditional, rigid factory automation that typically requires extensive reprogramming or physical retooling when production lines change.
The startup is currently collaborating with the BMW Group Technology Office to evaluate its dexterous manipulation technology. Industrial Next utilizes high-fidelity simulation engines that mimic real-world physics, allowing robots to learn complex tasks in virtual environments. This approach enables the machines to perform high-precision operations without the need for traditional hard-coded scripts.
The company's technology is already being deployed in the production of a major smartphone, where it handles delicate tasks such as threading flex cables and removing protective films from components. According to the founders, these systems operate at or above human speed with high accuracy, even when transferred to new production lines.
The long-term goal for Industrial Next is to enable end-to-end vehicle manufacturing without human intervention. The founders established the company to address the limitations they encountered while working at Tesla, where they frequently struggled to effectively program legacy industrial equipment for modern manufacturing requirements.
