The 70th IAEA General Conference hosted a side event focused on digital transformation in the nuclear sector. Participants discussed the integration of artificial intelligence across the lifecycle of nuclear power facilities, emphasizing the need for international regulatory standards and safety protocols.

Representatives from the IAEA, Rosatom, and other global nuclear companies attended the session. The discussion centered on transitioning from isolated AI experiments to systematic implementation, while maintaining strict adherence to safety and reliability requirements inherent to the industry.

Diana Syunyaeva from Rosatom stated that AI is a core component of the company's digital strategy, particularly for design, construction, and operational phases. She advocated for unified international methodological approaches to ensure responsible AI deployment.

The IAEA's ISOP AI Working Group is currently developing recommendations for the safe use of AI. Meanwhile, China Nuclear Power Engineering Co. shared practical experience in using AI to enhance engineering efficiency and support decision-making processes.

Mikhail Obolensky of Atomdata noted that while AI improves engineering workflows and knowledge management, it cannot currently be used to justify safety-critical decisions. Experts agree that AI applications must remain outside the scope of nuclear safety systems.
