The Hainan provincial government has released a new policy aimed at fostering an environmentally friendly free trade port. The initiative focuses on expanding green industries, including biodegradable materials and eco-friendly manufacturing technologies.
A key target for the region is the automotive sector. By 2027, at least 70% of all newly registered vehicles in Hainan must be new energy vehicles. This policy supports the broader goal of phasing out the sale of traditional fuel-powered cars by 2030.
Projections indicate that the share of new energy vehicles in the province will rise from 23.75% in 2025 to 45% by 2030. This transition positions Hainan to become the first province in China to halt the sale of internal combustion engine vehicles.
The province is also implementing a 'Zero Waste Island' strategy. This includes strict regulations on the processing of electronic waste, the development of recycling infrastructure, and a target to achieve an 85% utilization rate for construction waste by 2030.
