W. L. Gore & Associates has launched the GORE Battery Vents MultiVent Series, a single-part solution designed for electric vehicle and energy storage battery packs. The device integrates pressure equalization, moisture protection, and gas evacuation during thermal runaway events into one component.
The MultiVent design utilizes two valves and a microporous membrane, requiring only a single opening in the battery pack wall. This architecture replaces the need for separate evacuation valves, dual-stage vents, and desiccants, which the company notes can complicate sealing and increase validation requirements.
During standard operation, the vent provides an airflow of 1,200 L/h at 100 mbar, a rate Gore claims is up to six times higher than alternative options. Laboratory tests conducted at 22 degrees Celsius and 50 percent relative humidity showed moisture ingress of less than 20 mg per day.
For thermal runaway scenarios, the unit features a larger valve that opens at 50 mbar and provides an evacuation flow of 50 L/s at 180 mbar before resealing. The technology incorporates assets acquired from Vernay Laboratories in 2026, combining Gore membrane materials with Vernay valve systems.
