Google Labs has introduced Playground, a new platform designed to facilitate game creation through text prompts. The tool allows users to develop browser-based games without requiring traditional programming or design skills. Creators can choose between 2D and 3D formats, specify genres such as trivia or racing, and define gameplay mechanics and visual styles.
The platform supports both single-player and multiplayer modes. Users can upload their own images, which the AI then converts into game assets that match the project's art style. Once finished, games are accessible on mobile devices and computers. Projects can be kept private, shared via links, or published to the Explore gallery, which supports features like leaderboards.
Google plans to integrate Unity Spark into Playground in a future update. This addition is expected to provide users with advanced 3D capabilities and professional-grade game mechanics. The launch of Playground aligns with broader industry trends, as companies like Roblox have also recently introduced natural-language game creation tools.
This initiative follows Google's previous efforts in the gaming sector, including the development of the cloud gaming service Stadia in 2022 and the launch of YouTube Playables. The latter serves as a hub for web-based games that users can play instantly.
