Google has launched a public website allowing users to verify if media files were created by artificial intelligence. The tool supports a wide range of formats, including image files like JPG, PNG, and WEBP, video formats such as MP4 and MOV, and audio files including MP3, WAV, and FLAC.
The platform utilizes the SynthID technology, which Google introduced in 2023. This system embeds watermarks into content generated by models like Veo, Lyria, and Nano Banana, as well as tools such as Gemini, Flow, and Vids. Previously, access to this verification tool was restricted to select professionals.
The company reports that users currently perform 1 million verification requests daily. SynthID integration is already present within the Gemini application and the Google Chrome browser. Other industry players, including OpenAI, NVIDIA, and Kakao, also support the standard, with Apple expected to join soon.
While Microsoft and Meta have developed their own independent standards for content watermarking and verification, these solutions are not always accurate. They frequently struggle to identify media created by their own respective generative models.
