Google co-founder Sergey Brin stated that the Gemini model is entering a phase of recursive self-improvement. During a roundtable discussion on the new Gemini 4 Argon model, Brin noted that AI is now actively participating in the development of its own successor versions.
The company has already observed this trend with the Flash model series. Google reports that AI agents are currently handling a significant portion of production code generation and bug fixing. However, all code changes still require human verification before final submission.
The industry is seeing a broader shift toward this technology. Researchers from Anthropic, OpenAI, and DeepMind suggest that recursive self-improvement could become a reality within the next 3 to 12 months, according to a recent report by Gladstone AI.
The transition to self-improving systems brings new safety challenges. Experts warn that without robust protective mechanisms, there is a risk that humans could lose control over rapidly evolving technologies that iterate faster than traditional development cycles.
