Google has launched Playground, a browser-based platform that enables users to create custom games using AI prompts. The service is currently available in the US for users aged 18 and older at playground.google. The platform allows creators to build games without coding experience by using a conversational interface to adjust physics, rules, characters, and environments.

Users can share their creations via links or publish them to the Playground Explore gallery. The gallery features a ranking system based on ratings and activity, with support for leaderboards and multiplayer modes in selected genres. While the tool is free, Google One subscribers receive higher weekly token limits based on their specific plan.

The platform utilizes Google foundation models, including Gemini, Nano Banana, and Lyria, integrated with a custom harness. Additionally, Google announced a partnership with Unity to introduce Unity Spark, an AI-driven game development engine designed for professional-level creation and collaborative work. Games developed in Spark can be shared on the Playground platform.

Unity Spark is currently entering a closed beta phase, with a waitlist opening today for interested users. This move follows similar initiatives by other major tech companies, including Meta, which is rolling out AI game-building tools for its Horizon platform, and Roblox, which is testing its own AI-powered Build feature in select regions.
