Google has released Playground, a browser-based platform that enables users to create and test custom video games using AI prompts. The tool is currently available in the US for individuals aged 18 and older, requiring no prior programming knowledge or game engine experience.
The interface functions through conversational input, allowing users to describe their game concepts to generate results. Users can start from scratch, modify existing starter prompts, or utilize guided support. Physics and other game mechanics are adjusted through further text instructions rather than manual code editing.
This launch follows other Google initiatives in the AI-assisted creation space. In December 2025, the company launched the open beta for YouTube Playables Builder in the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia. Additionally, at the March 2026 GDC Festival of Gaming, Google introduced the Living Games framework, which leverages Gemini 3 Pro and Vertex AI.
The broader market is seeing an increase in AI-assisted app and game submissions to the App Store and Google Play as of April 2026. Other companies are pursuing similar prompt-driven creation strategies, including Meta with its Horizon Create and Studio tools, and The Sandbox with its AI Studio.
