Google has expanded access to the Skills tool, making it available to users of the free version of Gemini. Previously, this feature was restricted to subscribers of Pro and Ultra plans. Skills allow users to configure custom instructions that can be applied directly to queries within the main chat interface.
The new tool functions similarly to Gems, but offers a more streamlined integration. Users can trigger their custom configurations by typing the forward slash symbol followed by the specific command. This change is part of a broader transition as Google prepares to phase out the Gems feature entirely.
The company has scheduled the automatic migration of existing Gems to the Skills format for November 17, 2026. Until this date, Gems will continue to operate in their current state. After the transition, users will be able to access all their saved settings directly through the chat command system.
Although initial documentation suggested that Skills would remain a paid-only feature, Google has removed this restriction. Users with free accounts can now create and manage their custom instructions through a dedicated section within the Gemini platform.
