Google DeepMind released the Gemma 4 12B model in June 2026. This dense model features 11.95 billion parameters and a unified architecture that eliminates the need for traditional media-specific encoders. It requires 16 GB of RAM for inference and is compatible with the Unsloth Desktop environment.
Unlike previous models that use separate encoder-adapter chains for images and audio, Gemma 4 12B uses a compact 35-million-parameter module for image processing. It divides images into 48x48 pixel fragments, which are mapped directly into the model's latent space via matrix multiplication.
The model handles audio by processing 40-millisecond frames at a 16 kHz sampling rate, mapping them directly into the latent space. This design allows for native audio perception without a dedicated decoder, which is typically required in other models like the Gemma 4 E2B and E4B versions.
The unified architecture simplifies fine-tuning, as the model acts as a single entity without frozen external modules. In tests using the Unsloth Desktop environment, the model demonstrated the ability to summarize long texts, such as a 44,000-character article, while operating at an inference speed of 0.7 tokens per second.
