Google has launched Playground, an experimental platform that allows users to create video games using natural language prompts without requiring coding skills. Users can build projects from scratch or utilize pre-made templates, with the ability to modify game physics, rules, characters, and environments through ongoing dialogue with the AI.
The platform supports various genres, such as racing, quizzes, and tower defense games, which run directly in web browsers on both desktop and mobile devices. Creators can keep their projects private, share them via links, or publish them in the public Playground Explore gallery, which includes features like leaderboards and multiplayer modes.
Access to the service is currently restricted to users aged 18 and older in the United States. While the platform is free to use, it operates on a token-based system with weekly refreshes, offering higher limits for Google One AI subscribers. Google has not disclosed the specific AI models powering the platform.
Looking ahead, Google plans to integrate Playground with Unity Spark, a tool designed for more complex game development. This integration aims to provide advanced mechanics and 3D graphics capabilities. A closed beta test for Unity Spark is scheduled to take place later in 2026.
