Google has officially completed the transition from Google Assistant to Gemini on Android devices. The process, which began in early September, is now widespread across most device types in the US and Europe. Users can no longer revert to the legacy assistant, as the option to switch back has been removed from the Gemini application settings.
The update affects the stable version 17.60 and the beta version 17.62 of the app. The migration impacts a broad range of hardware, including smartphones, tablets, smartwatches running Wear OS, headphones, and Android Auto systems. Gemini is now the primary voice assistant, accessible via long-pressing the power button or specific screen gestures.
Despite the broad rollout, the transition has not yet impacted all hardware categories. Smart speakers and smart displays under the Google Nest and Google Home brands continue to support the original Google Assistant. The company had initially planned to finalize this shift in 2025, but the deadline was subsequently adjusted to 2026, with the final phase beginning on September 4.
