Google has released a standalone Gemini AI application for Windows 10 and 11, which became available globally on September 10, 2026. The tool is designed to operate as an overlay, allowing users to access the assistant via the Alt + Space keyboard shortcut without needing to open a web browser.
The application features a dedicated workspace for managing multi-step tasks and integrates directly with Google Workspace services, including Gmail and Google Drive. Users can generate images using the Nano Banana tool and create videos through Gemini Omni, all within a lightweight interface.
This release marks a shift from Google's previous desktop search application launched in April 2026. The company aims to compete with Microsoft Copilot by leveraging its existing ecosystem of users who rely on Google's productivity tools rather than Microsoft 365.
Erin Pettigrew, Director of Product Management for the Gemini App, led the development of the software. Google plans to introduce additional native desktop features in future updates to further expand the assistant's capabilities on the Windows platform.
