Google DeepMind, Meta, and the startup Isomorphic Labs are investing $300 million into the Biohub non-profit organization. This funding is part of a broader $1.8 billion initiative aimed at developing AI datasets for biomedical research.

Biohub, established in 2016 by Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, focuses on creating a virtual cell model. This digital environment is designed to allow researchers to conduct simulations to better understand biological processes and disease mechanisms.

The project receives significant backing from the US government. The Department of Energy plans to allocate over $500 million over the next five years, while the National Institutes of Health will contribute datasets and repositories valued at more than $500 million.

The initiative aims to make research data accessible to scientists globally. By predicting cellular behavior in both healthy and diseased states, these AI models are intended to accelerate the discovery of new prevention methods and treatments for various illnesses.

Separately, Google DeepMind has introduced the Atlas AI platform. This tool is designed to map potential DNA changes within the human genome, aiming to enhance the current understanding of biology and facilitate the development of new medical therapies.
