Global data shows a significant gap in electric vehicle adoption rates. In the first half of 2026, the share of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the United States reached 5.9 percent. In contrast, Uruguay has achieved a 50 percent BEV share, while China reported a 45 percent share in August 2026.

European markets also maintain a lead over the United States, with a 26 percent BEV share recorded in July 2026. Meanwhile, Chinese automotive brands are expanding their presence across Asia, Australia, and South America, where their electric models are increasingly competitive against traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.

The United States maintains strict protectionist policies that limit the entry of Chinese electric vehicles into its domestic market. While Canada has begun to allow imports of Chinese EVs, the US market faces challenges from policy shifts and reduced commitment from domestic automakers toward electrification projects.
