Nonprofit organization Epoch AI reports that 27.6 million H100-equivalent chips were sold by June 2026. This metric serves as a standardized unit for measuring AI computing power. Analysts project the total stock of these units to reach approximately 46 million by the end of 2026 and grow to roughly 140 million by the close of 2028.
Based on varying efficiency assumptions regarding floating-point operations per second, current and future hardware could support between 24 million and 24 billion AI agents. Under plausible scenarios, the projected 140 million units by 2028 could enable 1.2 billion agents. Research firm IDC independently forecasts 1 billion active AI agents by 2029.
As of September 2026, Epoch AI tracks 86 data centers housing 13.9 million H100-equivalent GPUs with a combined power capacity of 13.3 GW. This infrastructure represents 44-46% of global compute coverage. Scaling to the projected 140 million units will require a significant increase in energy capacity beyond current levels.
